Press Release: Annual Christmas Shoebox Appeal

Sussex based charity " Computers for Charities" launched it’s appeal this week for support to aid their annual Christmas shoebox appeal to assist the Elderly.

Chairman Simon Rooksby says "The appeal now entering it’s fourth year is definately not about numbers, but of supporting and encouraging elderly people experiencing real hardship across the UK and Eastern Europe"

Simon says "the responses from the recipients and supporters remains a humbling experience when you see the time and thought undertaken to prepare a shoebox or the conditions and circumstances the recipients endure".

In December the Charity will travel from the UK to Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia to distribute this years collection, plus for the first time sending 200 shoeboxes by container to Zimbabwe with much needed medical supplies, clothing and educational resources for the charities ongoing "African schools on Line".

Shoppers at the Hailsham branch of Waitrose raised £181 through Waitrose's new Community matters scheme which will greatly assist with aiding fuel and transport costs for the December run.

This new Waitrose initiative began this month, whereby shoppers are given a token at the checkout which can be given to one of three nominated charities each month providing the opportunity for local charities to benefit by up to £1000.

Simon says. "We remain overwhelmed at the growing level of local and national support for our appeal for the elderly, which we understand is quite unique to Computers for Charities"

Blatchington Mill School is one example of Organisations, Companies and Individuals supporting Computers for Charities. Initially donating redundant school computer equipment for the charities "African schools on Line" educational program the Staff and Governors are now collecting shoeboxes. Simon says "We were overwhelmed when contacted recently by the school for more information on our shoebox appeal. Such generosity from supporters like Blatchington Mill is absolutely invaluable and very much appreciated"

Computers for Charities, provides a variety of services and support both in the UK and Overseas. The Elderly shoebox appeal began four years ago, initially assisting hospital projects in northern Serbia it has grown and support projects in many countries now.

Computers for Charities began in 1994, and has worked and supported projects in 106 countries worldwide thus far. Despite such experience they found themselves quite unprepared for the levels of hardship and poverty still being experienced in many former Eastern European countries. Including; Hospitals without sheets and blankets, children playing out on the streets without shoes in temperatures of -20c, no electricity or water, plus the forgotten elderly.

Simon says, "Whilst we cannot change the world, in some places for some people we can bring encouragement and hope". Simon and fellow trustee Mark Robinson leave the UK on December 7th to deliver the hundreds of shoeboxes donated so far too projects and villages in Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia plus several hundred more already despatched by sea and bound for Zimbabwe.

This year’s trip will clock up over 3000 miles. A bigger vehicle would be a real boon says Simon, continually we are restricted by payload and hence our dream remains very much be able to purchase an adapted 7.5 tonne lorry for next year, but raising the £50,000 needed is far from easy.
